    Right hand is like …
Right hand is like the claw hammer banjo style. Check out David ” stringbean” Akeman from the Grand ‘ol Opry. String was the greatest banjo player to ever use this technique. We are lucky to have video of Son House, I’ve never seen another guitar player use this technique. Amazing!

    I remember, when I …
I remember, when I was 18 years old, hearing this album for the first time (this was 1993). Actually, it was a compelation of his songs, and I was stunned. I was in my Geo Metro, listening. When the White Stripes covered this, I was so happy and delighted. I think they paid a great homage to Sonhouse. I think they also enlightened people to true Mississippi blues, not the white boy, white bread version we had been sold in the 80’s.

    This song is boss …
This song is boss and this version is boss. The white stripes version, though not quite as good as this one, does do it justice in the way few covers of any song are able to do. The way they covered it just shows how influenced they are from this type of music.

As much as I think …
As much as I think that this version is better than The White Stripes’ one (and they’d be the first to admit it), I applaud them for bringing this fantastic music to my generation.

I’m fourteen, and although I found the blues in another way, I know many people for whom the White Stripes’ “Death Letter” was their first exposure.

    I found a live …
I found a live recording of him playing in England. When he puts his guitar down this man is still a storyteller. He had alot of wisdom to share. My dad used to always come up to me with old blues songs and I didn’t care much for it. Thought it was simple music for simple old people. Mr. Jack White made me see and hear differently. So yesterday, after 33 years wasted it feels like, I taught myself how to play the blues on my ukulele. Got a long way to go still. But also a century of inspiration.
