New Orleans Jazz Funeral for tuba player Kerwin James
Filed under: jazz

A traditional New Orleans Jazz Funeral for the late tuba player Kerwin James. He died in Oct. 2007. Alot of viewers have been asking whats the reason for rocking the casket, it’s so he can dance one last time. I also have a Mardi Gras Black Indian Funeral video on here too. I must WARN you it is’nt your “typical” funeral. For more videos, pics and New Orleans unique culture check out my myspace page at www.myspace.com/onenawlins

    the umbrella is …
the umbrella is traditional in second lines, it’s only black in this case becuase it’s a funeral. A jazz funeral is most common among african americans, but i’ve seen it done with other races…it’s a new orleans tradition, where we believe in celebrating a life, not mourning a loss. and yes, it is considered the “last dance” for an individual. it is truly an uplifiting experience…

this is just one reason why i love my home..coming together to rejoice in a time of sadness…celebrating a life lived instead of mourning it…we had a trad. jazz funeral and second line for my brother in law yesterday..he truly went out with as much love and excitement as he came in with..

    what is the …
what is the significance of the black umbrella? I would like to learn more. I have heard that the bouncing of the casket is the last “dance” for the deceased. Is this true? Is this typical of a funeral or is this part of Kerwin James’ last wishes? Thank you in advance for your time and sincere responses.
