Swing Out Sister - Breakout

Swing Out Sister is a British sophisti-pop musical group best known worldwide for their 1987 song “Breakout”, which was their only song to reach the US top 10. Various listeners have classified their sound as everything from smooth jazz to cool jazz to acid jazz.
The group was formed by Andy Connell (keyboards) and Martin Jackson (drums), and were later joined by Corinne Drewery (vocals)
In late 1986, the single “Breakout” was released. It reached the number three position on the UK charts, and number six in the United States.

Consequently, when they released their debut album, “it’s better to travel”, on May 11, 1987, it reached number one on the UK album charts.

The album registered with listeners for its mix of jazz and electropop, with a blend of real horns, synths (arranged subtly, to sound like strings), drums, and xylophones, scored by producer/arranger Richard Niles. The follow-up single to the effervescent “Breakout” was the brooding “Surrender”, which featured a trumpet solo performed by John Thirkell. It rose to number seven on the UK charts in January 1987. The next single was the more serious and jazzy “Twilight World”. This song was the subject of many remixes and was a dance club favourite worldwide. The final single “Fooled By a Smile” returned to the upbeat pop orientation characteristic of “Breakout”.

    I grew up in the 80 …
I grew up in the 80’s and as a musician I couldn’t stand most of the tune-hits that were put out because it was too overly synthesized, but when this song came out, along with the horns, the beat, and stlyle structure I then stopped dead on my tracks and just loved it! This was and still is a great tune! I also fell for the singer’s style, looks, and classy performance! I’ve been looking so long for this tune and I’m glad I found it! It just makes me wanna dance and I’m not a dancer! WOW!

I used to love this …
I used to love this song!!! The video was cute too. Everytime I would hear this song, it would put me in a kind of an emotional but up mood. It’s hard to explain. I used to love her bob haircut. This song was always such a drastic contrast to their regular sound. Much more pop-like. What memories!

    After accidentally …
After accidentally hearing a copy of Miley “Daddy’s Little Car Payment” Cyrus’s publication machine release of a song called “Breakout”, I had to hear this to stop the hemorrhaging. Thank God for decent talent.. too bad it was was 21 years ago. And some kid entering a bar for the first time will never hear this… what a shame…

    The first time I …
The first time I heard this song, I stopped dead in my tracks and said “what in the H###!” I don’t think everyone realises how different this tune was when it was released. It has elements of almost every musical genre, arranged perfectly! I just had to find out everything about this amazing group! Over twenty years later, they are still amazing. Their new album “Beautiful Mess” is fantastic!

Oh ! I would do almost anything to hear music like and more from the 80’s again. Todays music is so dark, angry and without any hope. …But this is just awesome.

    Sheldon66, I …
Sheldon66, I believe that you(like me)think she is amazing, but I am from North america and would love to see her or her something from her. Retronostalgic is somewhat correct about them falling off the map but he/she must not be a true fan as we are. I wish they would come back to the US even just to perform the old stuff. She will always be great!!!

    Where have they …
Where have they been? Well, they have and are still putting out CD’s. And actually very good CD’s. I am uming you are in North America…as a result you wouldn’t have heard much of this “work”. However, they are still very popular in Asia and Europe. They toured the U.S.A. last year or the year before. But if you are looking for their music on top 40 or pop stations forget it.
